Dear Parents,

We have been hard at work here in First Grade this week. We have been learning about comparing and contrasting information as well as main idea and supporting details. The children are doing very well with this. We have been learning how to fill in graphic organizers to record our thinking too. We continue to work on reading fluently and using good expression.

In math we are finishing up a unit on subtraction of basic facts and facts within 20. This includes identifying and using related facts in both addition and subtraction. Many children could use practice with subtraction at home.  They are also sometimes struggling to count backwards from teen numbers to help subtract.  Next week we will begin a unit on Number Patterns through 120.

A number of children haven’t been feeling well in our room.  As a reminder: please do not send your child to school if he or she is ill.  This flu season has been especially harsh and as you are aware, germs spread easily amongst young children.  Remember, if your child has vomited or has had a fever s/he CANNOT return to school until 24 have passed without medication to relieve the symptoms. I KNOW….I sound like a broken recordL

Next week our spelling list goes from 6 to 10 words for the week. The first time starts out easy but they get more difficult from that point. We do work on them in school but for many children that is not enough time. Please practice them daily at home.

For those who are not aware, our classroom assistant, Mrs. Bulka’s father passed away last week.  Please keep her and her family in your thoughts and prayers as she deals with this sad time.

**We are in need of paper towels.  I would appreciate it if you could send some next week. Enjoy the weekend
