Dear Parents,

We had another great week in first grade. The children are working hard and learning lots of new things.

We are finishing up our subtraction unit in Math next week.  The children are working pretty hard on this.  You can continue to practice at home using the terms, part, part, whole, difference and minus.  Please practice memorizing basic facts at home nightly.

We have been working on Nouns and Verbs in grammar and writing.  These are difficult concepts but the children are doing well. The children are also practicing saying words slowly to hear all the sounds when they write, as well as using a resource for words they are unsure of.  They continue to work on recognizing where a sentence begins and ends.  You can help by writing small notes to your child and reading them together.  You can also ask your child to write notes and letters to you and other relatives whenever possible.

October is Fire Prevention Month.  Today we went up to the Jefferson Fire Department and had a terrific program presented by the volunteer firefighters.  The children enjoyed a tour of the trucks, learned to Stop, Drop and Roll, and then had cupcakes.  Each child has been given a water bottle with gifts inside from the JFD.

Enjoy the weekend,

Andi Cammer
