Dear Parents,

We had a somewhat productive week, even though it was only four days and we had a number of students out sick.  Please remember to keep your children home when they are ill to prevent the further spread of illness.  Thank you to those who always abide by that policy; it really does help.  Hopefully we will be done with these germs soon!!

We finished up our subtraction unit in math this week, with a topic test today.  The children did pretty well with this.  You can continue to practice basic subtraction facts at home nightly.

In reading we learned about identifying the lessons we can learn from characters in a story.  We read a few versions of the fable, The Boy Who Cried Wolf and discussed the lesson he learned and what we can learn from him.  We are also really focusing on isolating vowels to hear the short sounds. This is good practice for all first graders.

In writing we are focusing on complete sentence structure.  We have learned that all sentences have a complete thought, start with a capital, end with punctuation and have spaces between the words.  I’m impressed at the students’ abilities to adhere to these rules.
