Dear Parents,

What a great week here in first grade!  The children are really learning the routines and working hard.  This is a nice group of kids who enjoy each other’s company.

We started our guided reading groups this week. Most children did the work that was sent home and returned the baggies the next day.  It is imperative that the bag is returned daily as the materials in it are used with groups the following day.  Thank you for your help with this. Please remember that each group is working at a different level and that your child may have work that is different from another child in this class.

In science we continue to learn about MONARCHS and their life cycle. We have been reading MANY books on this subject and have learned some new vocabulary words.  Such as:  pupa, molting, thorax, abdomen, transparent, and chrysalis.  Take some time to ask your child what these words mean.  I managed to find TWENTY-FOUR monarch caterpillars this year!  We have already had 7 go through the process of metamorphosis.  We released 2 yesterday and 3 today.  The rest are still in their chrysalides. There should be some in our nets when you come for Open House next Wednesday.

In Social Studies we completed our study of the constitution with a culminating activity of writing our own Classroom Constitution. The children learned some pretty impressive vocabulary such as, constitution, liberty, justice, tranquility, and posterity.

In math we finished up our first unit on understanding addition.  Many children did very well. They have learned many strategies for basic facts.  We also worked on vocabulary such as part, whole, in all, word problem, addend and sum. Review these with your child regularly.  It would also be helpful to work on basic facts with your child nightly for a few minutes, as well as number recognition, as we have realized that many children are reversing numbers and misidentifying two digit numbers. Next week we begin a unit called Understanding Subtraction.

Here are some Housekeeping Items…

  • There have been lots of sick kids already this year.  If your child has had a fever or vomits s/he CANNOT return to school until 24 hours have passed since the last episode with no medication preventing it.  Please adhere to this rule to prevent the spread of illness.  Thank you to the parents who have already done thisJ
  • Children are not permitted to bring toys to school except on Mondays for Weekend News.  Thank you for helping with this.

Have a nice weekend,

Andi Cammer
